What is Catfishing?

The term 'catfish' was inspired by the actual sport of catfishing. One would blindly place his hand into holes in the water where the catfish live and wait for a catfish to grab onto it. It was a dangerous and unpredictable activity because you were never sure of what to expect or what you were going to catch.

A catfish is someone who pretends to be someone they are not using social media platforms to create false identities and therefore pursuing deceptive online emotional/romantic relationships.

A catfish is often "undesirable" in real life so they create an online identity to please people.

A documentary in 2010 called 'Catfish' said "When certain fish are transported in tanks on ships, they would often die because they would not swim around or keep themselves moving due to the lack of space. They decided to put catfish in the tanks to chase the other fish around and keep them stimulated. 'Catfish' are the people who keep you on your toes, they keep you questioning and guessing."
